"The Chosen One" claimed the welterweight crown on Saturday after landing a devastating knockout in the first round of Robbie Lawler. The two didn't trade any shots in the first 45 seconds of the fight, but once the two started throwing Woodley caught Lawler with a strong right and dropped him straight to the ground. From there, Woodley teed off on the hurt Lawler before the ref stopped the fight.
It is the ninth time the welterweight title has changed hands in UFC history. It is the seventh time a title has changed hands in the UFC in 2016.
"He fainted me, my hand went down and he caught me," Lawler said after the fight. Woodley was clearly emotional after the fight and his family was right there by his side. He failed in his chance to win a title while he was a member of Strikeforce, losing to Nate Marquadt. But now, he has reached the peak he couldn't before the UFC purchased the company.
"I was nervous that I wasn't nervous," Woodley said post fight. "I've been envisioning this belt being around my waist for my life."
It was Woodley's fourth KO/TKO in his last five wins. Now, the sky is the limit for the Missouri native.
