Black Friday

Advertisements

Black Friday (/ˈblæk ˈfraɪdeɪ/) is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November). Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day. Many non-retail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the following Friday off, which, along with the following regular weekend, makes it a four-day weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time. Similar stories resurface year upon year at this time, portraying hysteria and shortage of stock, creating a state of positive feedback. In 2014, spending volume on Black Friday fell for the first time since the 2008 recession. $50.9 billion was spent during the 4-day Black Friday weekend, down 11% from the previous year. However, the U.S. economy was not in a recession. Christmas creep has been cited as a factor in the diminishing importance of Black Friday, as many retailers now spread out their promotions over the entire months of November and December rather than concentrate them on a single shopping day or weekend. The earliest evidence of the phrase Black Friday applied to the day after Thanksgiving in a shopping context suggests that the term originated in Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. This usage dates to at least 1961. More than twenty years later, as the phrase became more widespread, a popular explanation became that this day represented the point in the year when retailers begin to turn a profit, thus going from being "in the red" to being "in the black". For many years, it was common for retailers to open at 6:00 a.m., but in the late 2000s many had crept to 5:00 or 4:00. This was taken to a new extreme in 2011, when several retailers (including Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy, and Bealls) opened at midnight for the first time. In 2012, Walmart and several other retailers announced that they would open most of their stores at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, prompting calls for a walkout among some workers. In 2014, stores such as JCPenney, Best Buy, and Radio Shack opened at 5:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day while stores such as Target, Walmart, Belk, and Sears opened at 6:00 PM on Thanksgiving Day. Three states, Rhode Island, Maine, and Massachusetts, prohibit large supermarkets, big box stores, and department stores from opening on Thanksgiving, due to blue laws. There have been reports of violence occurring between shoppers on Black Friday. Since 2006, there have been 7 reported deaths and 98 injuries throughout the United States. It is common for prospective shoppers to camp out over the Thanksgiving holiday in an effort to secure a place in front of the line and thus a better chance at getting desired items. This poses a significant safety risk (such as the use of propane and generators in the most elaborate cases, and in general, the blocking of emergency access and fire lanes, causing at least one city to ban the practice.)

Antonio Margarito vs. Ramon Alvarez Complete Results

Advertisements

Antonio Margarito ended his four-plus-year retirement in March with a unanimous-decision victory over Jorge Paez Jr., and he followed that win up with a controversial split-decision triumph over Ramon Alvarez on Saturday night in Baja California, Mexico.

According to BoxingScene.com, one judge scored the fight 95-94 for Alvarez, while two scored it 97-92 for Margarito.

Margarito is now the owner of the WBO Continental Super Welterweight Championship belt by virtue of the win, per BoxingScene.com. He also improved to 40-8-0 in his career thanks to the victorious effort against the 30-year-old.

Margarito took an extended hiatus following a unanimous-decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2010 and a 2011 defeat at the hands of Miguel Cotto, but he returned to the ring and withstood a knockdown by Paez to come back and secure a victory that jump-started a potential resurgence.

While the 38-year-old talked a big game in advance of his showdown against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's older brother, he backed it up in a big way Saturday.

"In May [against Jorge Paez Jr.] we were working on explosiveness and speed," Margarito said before Saturday's bout, per BoxingScene.com's Miguel Rivera. "I feel much better than I was in my camp before Paez Jr. I'll win, and I'll do my job."

Now that he's established himself since returning to the ring, Margarito will presumably be on the lookout for a fight against an opponent of a grander stature.

According to Rivera, Margarito's "ultimate goal" is to land such a fight, while Canelo Alvarez is reportedly "at the top of his list."

Margarito would be an overwhelming underdog against the 26-year-old stud, but a meeting between the old and new guards would make for compelling television a few months down the line.

UFC 201 Complete Results - Lawler vs. Woodley Results

Advertisements

"The Chosen One" claimed the welterweight crown on Saturday after landing a devastating knockout in the first round of Robbie Lawler. The two didn't trade any shots in the first 45 seconds of the fight, but once the two started throwing Woodley caught Lawler with a strong right and dropped him straight to the ground. From there, Woodley teed off on the hurt Lawler before the ref stopped the fight.

It is the ninth time the welterweight title has changed hands in UFC history. It is the seventh time a title has changed hands in the UFC in 2016.

"He fainted me, my hand went down and he caught me," Lawler said after the fight. Woodley was clearly emotional after the fight and his family was right there by his side. He failed in his chance to win a title while he was a member of Strikeforce, losing to Nate Marquadt. But now, he has reached the peak he couldn't before the UFC purchased the company.

"I was nervous that I wasn't nervous," Woodley said post fight. "I've been envisioning this belt being around my waist for my life."

It was Woodley's fourth KO/TKO in his last five wins. Now, the sky is the limit for the Missouri native.

Miss Teen USA 2016 Results

Advertisements

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Miss Teen USA.

Out of 51 beautiful contestants, Miss Texas Teen Karlie Hay wowed the judges like nobody else with her brains, talent and beauty Saturday night at the annual beauty pageant held inside The Venetian in Las Vegas.

While there were plenty of reasons to celebrate in the final moments of the telecast streamed live online, Karlie and all the finalists went through quite a weekend before a winner was crowned. In fact, Miss Texas' toughest task may have come during the Q&A portion. Musician and judge Savannah Keyes wanted to know what the future president should tackle with teens first.

"Peer pressure, hands down," Karlie said in front of a sold-out crowd before addressing drinking, drugs and partying. "The next president needs to confront this issue and tell teens that you need to be yourself and be a leader and of course the next Miss Teen USA needs to be a leader."

"This decision reflects an important cultural shift we’re all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," she wrote. Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA's fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are."

“If they are looking to expand this is a very shrewd move. It’s consistent with the overall brand and message the new owners are talking about,” says pageant coach Valerie Hayes. “I think that it will cause more parents to be open to their daughters competing in a state or local Teen Miss USA pageant, because its been a concern of parents in the past.”

The pageant’s shift from swimsuits to activewear is also a smart business move, chasing the rise of athleisure fashion, says former Miss Virginia Nancy Redd. “Teens are spending .1 percent of their life in a bathing suit and 50 percent in athleisure. The pageant is following the trend of who can sponsor them.”

Reaction to the decision was overwhelmingly positive.

“This is a great step in the right direction of women embracing their physical strength, as opposed to their appearance,” says Redd, who won Miss America’s swimsuit competition in 2003. “This is focusing on what bodies can do, not just what they look like.”

USA vs Colombia 2016 result

Advertisements

The U.S. Men’s National Team secured a second fourth place finish in its Copa America history after a 1-0 loss to Colombia at University of Phoenix Stadium in the teams’ final match of the 2016 Copa America Centenario.

The USA had to once again shuffle its defense, this time due to injury, as Matt Besler was drafted into the middle alongside Geoff Cameron and Michael Orozco came in at right back. Additionally, veteran goalkeeper Tim Howard saw his first action of the competition, starting in goal in place of No. 1 ‘keeper Brad Guzan.

The reshuffled defense was breached in the 31st minute as Colombia attacked down the right wing before sending the ball into the center of the pitch just outside the U.S. box for James Rodriguez to play in right back Santiago Arias, whose headed pass was bundled across the line by a sliding Carlos Bacca.

While the U.S. had its chances to score in the second half, notably on a Clint Dempsey free kick and a Bobby Wood shot that hit the right post, the Yanks were unable to find the net despite U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann also bringing on attacking talents Christian Pulisic and Darlington Nagbe late in the match.

The fourth place finish matches the USA’s best placement in a Copa America tournament, which it last achieved in 1995 in Uruguay.

The team now has two months off before reconvening in September for its final two Semifinal Round 2018 World Cup Qualifying matches. The USA will first travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2 before returning home to face Trinidad & Tobago on Sept. 9 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla.

Goal Scoring Rundown: COL – Carlos Bacca (Santiago Arias), 31st minute: After an initial Colombia attack down the right wing was rebuffed, Juan Cuadrado sent the ball into the center of the field for James Rodriguez, who lifted a deft chip over the U.S. defense and into the path of overlapping right back Santiago Arias. Arias headed the ball across the face of goal and Bacca slid in front of his defender to redirect the ball across the goal line for the game’s only strike. USA 0, COL 1 FINAL

Key Saves and Defensive Stops: Tim Howard, 12th minute: Colombia attacked down the right hand side often, building on the link between Juan Cuadrado and James Rodriguez, which nearly paid off early in the match as Cuadrado slipped a pass to James in traffic at the top of the U.S. box. The Real Madrid attacker snapped off a powerful shot, but Howard was well positioned and got down quickly to push the shot outside of his left post.

Christian Zapata, 16th minute: On perhaps the USA’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes, Alejandro Bedoya was able to beat his defender to the end line inside the Colombia penalty area. He cut the ball back toward the penalty spot and it arrived at Clint Dempsey’s feet at the top left corner of the six-yard box. Dempsey attempted a one-time redirect on goal, but Zapata slid in from behind just as the ball left Dempsey’s foot to make the crucial block.

David Ospina, 51st minute: In the center of the USA’s offensive third, Dempsey curled a blistering free kick over the Colombia wall from nearly 30 yards out. The shot was post marked for the top right corner of the goal until Ospina made an incredible acrobatic stop, leaping at full stretch to get a hand to the ball and send it over the cross bar.

Next on the Schedule: The U.S. MNT returns to action in September with a final pair of Semifinal Round World Cup Qualifying games. First the USA heads to St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2 before returning home to face Trinidad & Tobago at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sept. 9.
